Step into a realm of wonder at JOALI Maldives as we introduce you to the captivating charms of manta rays. Imagine exploring the sparkling waters surrounding our resort through our Manta Expedition, witnessing the breathtaking dance of these creatures in their natural environment, and capping off the day with cocktails by the shore. You’ll be delighted to know that our resident Marine Biologist is on hand to answer questions, offer insights, and enhance your understanding of the ocean’s residents.
Introducing the Manta Rays
Cousins to sharks, these remarkable creatures boast distinctive features that set them apart, from their expansive fins resembling wings to astonishingly wide, gaping mouths. The giant manta rays, with wingspans measuring up to seven metres long, cast an imposing allure while their equally bewitching counterparts, the reef rays, exude an understated charm.
Manta Season in the Maldives
Yearning to witness manta rays in their natural habitat? Look no further than the Maldives where jewel-blue waters provide a serene abode for these gentle giants. Drawn by the abundance of plankton carried by strong currents, they tend to congregate in specific areas. The Maldivian Manta Ray Project (MRRP) has identified some prime “hot spots” in Hanifaru Bay, Fuvahmulah and South Ari Atoll. The presence of manta rays is closely aligned with monsoon patterns.
Manta Sightings at JOALI Maldives
Manta rays frequently grace our island waters with their presence, especially during the Southwest Monsoon (May to November). Depending on the season and tides, you’ll likely be treated to daily encounters with these titans, offering indelible memories etched into the heart of your oceanic experience.
Meeting Manta Rays
Divers and snorkellers at our resort can embark on their explorations at ease — unlike their stinging ray cousins, the mantas pose no threat to people. While large and powerful, they are extremely peaceful, and tend to be very tranquil around human visitors. Nevertheless, the golden rule applies: maintain a respectful distance from all marine life forms, refrain from touching them and avoid interfering with their natural behaviour.
Protecting a Precious Legacy
Sadly, manta rays face a number of threats in today’s world, with overfishing and pollution posing significant dangers to their population. Often ensnared unintentionally in fishing nets, mantas are also hunted for their gill plates which are used in traditional medicine. Pollution, particularly plastic waste, disrupts their habitat and contaminates their diet, endangering their existence.
As stewards of the sea, our choices matter. At JOALI Maldives, we play a vital part in protecting manta rays by reducing plastic consumption and opting for sustainably sourced seafood to decrease the number of mantas caught as bycatch. We invite our guests to join the effort to safeguard these beguiling creatures.
